BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Police say they have identified the weapon used in the deadly shooting at Five Points South, but they cannot release specific information yet.
There is no update on the suspect, but Crime Stoppers continues to receive tips.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said it was a tough time for Birmingham police officers after seeing so many people killed and injured on Saturday night, but officers were determined to bring justice to the victims and their families. He said he is also working hard on this.
Fitzgerald says there are mental health resources available for officers with borderline personality disorder, and it’s okay to not be okay. This is the third time that many of these men and women have caused four murders this year in addition to other crimes. Fitzgerald says it can be tough, but these officers are signing up to make a difference in their communities, including helping uncover the gunman who shot 21 people Saturday night. In addition, it was also included. He added that there are available resources such as peer support and counseling.
“We have a bad habit of compartmentalizing what we see. What happens is that if we don’t talk about what we see, eventually it has to come out. And that happens in a lot of different ways. Fortunately, the Birmingham Police Department has resources and mental health resources available to them,” Fitzgerald said.
He says police officers need to take advantage of the support available to them because what they have seen recently is difficult for anyone to deal with.
They are also asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers.
