COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A group of women had the opportunity to learn some practical self-defense techniques for free Saturday, thanks to Brazos Valley MMA and Fitness.
The company, located in Post Oak Mall, has been offering free classes for women for more than a year.
Each class is different and we try to hold them every 3-4 months. It all began when BVMMA became aware of the issue of sexual assault on college campuses and within the community.
These sessions provide a way to teach skills that are useful in potentially dangerous situations.
The latest one-hour course focused on teaching women how to use their bodies, how to get back up if they fall, and how to escape if they are grabbed by the wrist.
“It’s always good to have some skills and techniques up your sleeve just in case,” says BVMMA instructor Dmitri Westbrook. “If you can take home just one technique you learned today, I’ve basically done my job.”
KBTX spoke with Candice Muñoz, who visited the class with her daughter Lillian.
“I just wanted to take a self-defense class with her so that if something were to happen, she would be able to take care of herself,” Munoz said.
That’s when she came across a free women’s defense class offered by BVMMA.
“I searched on the internet, found it, contacted the owner here, and they arranged it for me,” Muñoz said.
Candace said she most enjoyed learning these skills with her daughter and seeing Lillian’s confidence and aggression.
“The biggest thing I learned is to always be ready to fight back and always like to be poised and have the confidence to fight back,” Lillian Jakowski said.
The two said they plan to attend the next free class when it is held.
