The Texas Tech football team is currently trying to rewrite one of the stories of the Joey McGuire era. In the first two years under the current head coach, the Red Raiders struggled early in the season, going just 7-7 in September and October.
But this year, Tech has a 5-1 record as of mid-October and could earn a berth in a bowl game by defeating Baylor in Lubbock on Saturday afternoon. Currently, the earliest Tech has reached bowl eligibility in a calendar year under the McGuire administration is Nov. 18.
Of course, the Red Raiders have bigger ambitions than just getting into a mid- or lower-tier bowl game. Instead, Tech wants to play in the Big 12 Championship.
To achieve that goal, McGuire’s team cannot afford to stumble this weekend. After Saturday, three of the next four games will be road tests.
Like Tech, Baylor enters this game after opening week. But you could also argue that the Bears are the more desperate team.
They will be looking to stop a four-game losing streak after losing their first three conference games. Additionally, head coach Dave Aranda is on the hot seat in Waco.
On the other hand, you could argue that the Bears have little to play for other than pride. They are just 2-4 on the season and have yet to beat a power conference team.
Still, the Red Raiders come into this game as the chase after a 5-1 start to the season and a 3-0 record in Big 12 play. These two programs have split the past eight games since Baylor won five straight in this series from 2011-2015.
Moreover, three of the past five games in the series have been decided by one point. So Red Raider fans should prepare for some new exciting things this weekend.
