Dreams: The passions that were once the reason many people aspired to grow up are now relegated to the depths of our memories, either unrealistic or unstable.
Giving up on a dream doesn’t just mean forgetting about it completely; it can also mean simply losing the passion to pursue it. Some careers are presented in a way that doesn’t seem to be the case, and can crush your desire to pursue your dreams when the realities of life set in.
“I gave up on my passion to become an architect. I really wanted to go to graduate school and pursue a career in architecture, and I also wanted to get a license someday,” said Shobnom Bashar, a senior architecture major. Ta. “After completing the course, it was the biggest reality check of my life.”
Growth is also one of the factors that prevents us from pursuing our dreams. Being young and inexperienced can give a deceptive image.
Mando Mahmoud, a freshman majoring in civil engineering, said, “After I grew up and realized that sometimes dreams aren’t the only thing in the world, I realized that it takes time and is not the best option for me.” .
When asked what dreams they had given up on, many students immediately thought of career-related dreams. I thought of only one dream about my family.
Phuong Minh, a senior chemistry major, said she had given up on her “dream of actually having children.” Ming realized that chasing her dream of having children meant she was missing out on experiences. She felt that her dreams were influenced by family traditions and the people around her.
“I just want to do what I want to do. I want to build my own career, I want to travel, and I can’t do that with the traditions and ideas of my parents or other people,” she said. Ta.
Gufurhan Kadoom, a junior biomedical engineering major, said he gave up on his dream of becoming a flight attendant because “it’s for people whose families are financially stable.”
Kadoom’s dream closed when she realized how time-consuming and financially demanding it was to become a flight attendant.
Many things can get in the way of pursuing your dreams. Other times, a combination of factors can make pursuing what you truly enjoy seem impossible.
It’s not too late, so steal some time every now and then to revisit that dream. Don’t let your dreams remain buried.
