STEVENSON, Miss. (WLUC) — High school students from within and outside the Kearney-Nadeau School District gathered in the Stevenson High School gym Wednesday morning.
Students were not there for sports, but rather for the chance to find a career that would allow them to stay at Upper Michigan.
Organizer Susan Massarini said the job fair is meant to educate students about opportunities to live and work locally.
“The students themselves don’t really know what’s in their own community, much less travel 30 or 40 miles to Escanaba or Iron Mountain,” Massarini said.
The event was attended by 42 companies representing a variety of industries, from banking to the military.
Massarini said the Stevenson Fire Department has been able to recruit more members from among students.
“They have a cadet program for students who are interested in becoming a paramedic, learning about firefighting, whatever,” Massarini said. “They’ve had just four students enter the cadet program which helps with any emergency situations or special events.”
RT Electrical, a business located between Menominee and Stevenson, was represented by Stevenson High School graduate Jacob Ross.
Ross, who is currently an electrical work apprentice, said last year’s career fair helped him choose his future job.
“I knew I wanted to work in electrical but wasn’t sure yet. When I saw that RT Electrical was close by and they were hiring, I decided to stay in the area. It allowed me to stay in the community I grew up in and contribute to a better community,” Ross said.
Approximately 350 high school students from four schools participated in the event.
