Clemson coach Dabo Swinney provided an update on injured true freshman receiver Bryant Wesco after Saturday’s win over Wake Forest. Wesco did not travel with the team to Winston-Salem due to an ankle injury.
Swinney explained that Wesco was injured in Week 6 against Florida State. He continued to play in the remainder of that contest, but began feeling the effects a few days later.
“It was in last week’s game,” Swinney said. “He rolled it. It was about a two-minute drive and I think he tried to run to the sideline instead of just getting on the field. He played the whole game. He was done. But the next day I was in a lot of pain.”
Wesco is a four-star prospect ranked as the No. 61 overall player and No. 13 receiver in the 2024 cycle, according to On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average using all four major recruiting media companies. He had 11 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns in the first five games of the season.
Clemson is hoping for Wesco’s early return, but he wasn’t the only one to miss Saturday’s game. Offensive lineman Colin Sadler was out with a calf injury, but Swinney gave hope for his status next week.
“Colin is getting better every day,” the coach said. “He had some success last week but stumbled a little bit, but we’re hoping he’ll be better by Monday.”
Sadler’s absence has given opportunities to younger players like Harris Sewell, who had a big performance against the Demon Deacons.
“He played center and guard,” Swinney said. “We had three guys taking snaps today. Trent (Howard) actually ended the game with a snap. We actually got Trent at right tackle and drove it a little bit.
“We were trying to hold off Mason Wade today because we’re managing some of their games. We’re just trying to put off having to make decisions on some guys as long as possible. But Harris did a great job.”
Clemson will be hoping to have Sadler back this week as they prepare to play Virginia at noon ET on Saturday.
