NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) — Mental health and suicide prevention groups came together in North Platte on Saturday for the annual “Stop the Stigma” event.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and the Surviving Suicide Foundation, in partnership with Stop the Stigma and Families First, is working to spread the message that it’s okay to ask for help when it comes to your mental health.
The groups are working together in the North Platte area to show people in need that resources are available, and Surviving Suicide Foundation Director Miai Lewis said the organization, along with many others, stands ready to help.
“We’re trying to remove the stigma that you can’t talk about mental health, that mental health is a weakness. What we try to do is get people the support they need through the community. If I can’t help them, I’ll help them get the support,” Lewis said. “We worked with families first, then we did other outreach like awareness walls. We’re in the Recovery Connection shelter. We try to do whatever we can to support and improve our community.”
