AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is pleased to announce that the Fitness Wellness Unit (FWU) has been awarded the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 2024 Police Officer Wellness Award. FWU was selected for its strong commitment to improving the physical, mental and overall health of DPS employees across the state.

“The physical and mental health of our employees, both commissioned and non-commissioned, is essential to DPS’s mission to serve Texas and protect Texas,” said DPS Director Stephen McCraw. “This award is a testament to the Fitness and Wellness Unit’s unwavering commitment to promoting the overall well-being of our agency’s employees during their tenure and retirement.”

The Officer Wellness Award, announced at the annual Destination Zero National Officer Safety and Wellness Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., is an award-winning award for reducing stress, improving fitness, or actively living a healthier life. Awarded to a law enforcement agency that has developed a program that improves the health of its officers by promoting We reviewed our diet and lifestyle and institutionalized wellness practices to support the physical and mental health of our employees.

The FWU falls under the Training Operations Division (TOD) and provides three primary functions to the DPS. FWU is responsible for all of the mental and physical conditioning/training of current Corps cadets passing through the DPS Academy, conducts physical fitness tests required for commissioned Corps cadets throughout the state, and provides physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep training. , stress management, and many other health issues for all staff. -Related topics.

Since its founding in 2010, FWU has grown rapidly in size and demand. The six-person unit plays a major role in educational wellness events held at DPS, traveling throughout Texas and surrounding states to share DPS best practices with other agencies, and visiting DPS headquarters and the state Capitol. I teach multiple group exercise classes daily at Capitol Hill.
