Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.—For the first time in U.S. Army history, a marketing campaign spotlights the diverse and important contributions of civilian personnel, with several Rock Island Arsenal and Joint Manufacturing Technology Center employees representing their expertise and skills. The campaign, titled “Find the Next Level,” encourages individuals to explore an Army civilian career, a unique and rewarding way to serve the nation while building expertise across a variety of fields. “Army civilians are needed in a variety of occupations across the country and around the world,” said Maj. Shamika Hill of the Army’s Office of Corporate Marketing. “We’re excited to finally give the Army Civilian Corps the recognition it deserves and show there are many ways to serve our nation even when you’re not in uniform.”

Jackson is among those featured in the RIA-JMTC campaign. Jolene Phelps, welder. Sidney Etheridge specializes in mechanical repairs. Brian Swisher, Forger. Casey Rancourt, machinist; Project Manager Nick Schlapp and other civilians from Army Sustainment Command, Joint Munitions Command, and Rock Island Arsenal. Their inclusion serves as a powerful reminder of the important work that Army civilians living in the Quad-Cities do regarding national defense.

“Our nation’s civilians are the core of RIA-JMTC and are sworn to support and defend our Constitution, just like our nation’s soldiers. It’s incredible to see them recognized on such a grand stage. It’s incredibly rewarding,” said Col. David Guida, RIA-JMTC commander. “The Army is more than just soldiers in the field. Behind every mission are civilians like Shanika, Jolene, Sydney, Brian, Casey, and Nick, whose work enables our soldiers to succeed. This campaign helps show that Army civilians are making a big difference.”

This campaign provides a platform for these employees to share stories highlighting how they contribute to the Army’s readiness and mission. Their roles at RIA-JMTC range from practical technical skills to project management, all of which are essential to maintaining the Army’s operational capabilities.

“I wanted a career that would challenge me and make a difference,” Phelps said. “As a welder here, I get to do both jobs. I’m proud to be part of something bigger than myself.”

By highlighting the unique role that Army civilians play in fields such as manufacturing, technology and logistics, the campaign will reach more people, whether they are new graduates or seasoned professionals looking for a new challenge. We aim to inspire you to consider a career in the Army.

“The Army is a major employer of civilians, with opportunities in a wide range of careers including cutting-edge fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Maj. Casey Sherrod, AEMO. “Without civilians, many of the Army’s activities would not be possible.”

RIA-JMTC’s important role in national defense has long been a cornerstone of Army manufacturing, producing equipment critical to military operations since 1875. The civilian workforce is a key part of that success. RIA-JMTC employees use a variety of specialized skills to contribute to everything from producing weapons and military vehicles to ensuring critical machinery operates at peak performance.

“It’s rewarding to know that the equipment we continue to operate is critical to the Army’s mission,” Ethridge said. “When I come to work every day, I feel like I’m contributing to something important.”

This marketing campaign will help the Army go beyond just filling positions to hiring passionate and skilled people who want to make an impact, whether it’s on the factory floor at RIA-JMTC or in the complex logistics management of military operations around the world.
