Finnish higher education ‘has gender equality issues’

Research shows that men remain overrepresented in senior management positions

The majority of students and staff at Finnish higher education institutions are women, but top jobs are still held by men, according to Akava, a trade union federation representing Finnish professionals and managers. Mr Acava investigated the university’s administration and concluded that it had “serious gender equality issues”.

Sociocultural anthropologist Heidi Harkonnen analyzed the gender distribution of all Finnish higher education institutions, including 13 regular universities and 24 universities of applied sciences. Research data was collected from public sources between June and August of this year.
