JAMES CITY COUNTY — Fitness courts officially opened Oct. 24 with a celebratory ribbon cutting, equipment showcase and “Battle of the Badges” relay contest.

James City County has partnered with Virginia’s National Fitness Campaign, sponsored by Aetna, to bring state-of-the-art outdoor fitness courts and digital wellness programs to the county. Funded by a grant from the Williamsburg Health Foundation, the fitness court was developed to expand free access to quality training and provide equitable access to exercise for communities across the state. has been.

The James City County Fitness Court is the first in the Tidewater region and the ninth in Virginia.

This equipment is designed for ages 14 and up and features exercises for adaptable skill levels. Users are encouraged to download the free Fitness Court app. The app acts as a coach in your pocket, turning your outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.

People in the Williamsburg metropolitan area experience health problems related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, aging, and social isolation, according to statistics collected and analyzed by the Williamsburg Health Foundation. All of these are risk factors for poor health and can be managed or prevented through intervention. and lifestyle changes. Deanna Van Hirsch, president and CEO of the foundation, said the community fitness court aligns well with the foundation’s mission and strategic focus of increasing opportunities for physical activity and social connection in the community. He said that he is doing so.

After the “Battle of the Badges” began, members of the James City County Fire and Police Departments faced off in a 3-on-3 relay. Contestants were challenged to perform multiple exercises using the equipment before moving on to the next participant. The competition ended in a draw between both teams.
