Group of 31 8th graders The Fountain Valley School District had a unique learning experience this week when they visited their local Hyundai North American headquarters.
The field trip, organized by Fulton Middle School science teachers Amy Peterson and Beto Huang, gave students the opportunity to learn about different careers in the automotive industry and participate in hands-on STEM activities.
The 8th grade students earned a spot on the trip through a contest in their science class. Peterson’s students designed protective capsules for the egg-dropping challenge, and Fun’s class built cars made from water bottles to compete in races.
During the visit, Hyundai staff provided an overview of the vehicle’s design and planning, followed by a creative activity in which students assembled large-scale vehicles using recycled materials. The day ended with a tour of the electric Genesis GV60 and a demonstration of remote parking and facial recognition technology.
Fulton students and teachers were joined by ABC 7 reporters and photojournalists who covered the field trip for local news stations in Los Angeles.
“We want our students to know that there are so many job opportunities out there, even in industries they might not have thought of, like automotive,” Peterson said. “And of course, I want them to leave middle school thinking that science is fun.”
The science teacher said he had been doing “Sundays like Hyundai” to remind himself of the correct pronunciation of the students’ names since they left the main office.
