Game Overview: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech finished off a productive afternoon at Lane Stadium with a 21-6 victory over Georgia Tech, extending its series lead to 12-8. The win marked the Hokies’ third straight win, their longest winning streak since 2019, and shows they will continue to gain momentum as the season progresses.

Virginia Tech gained momentum with two key touchdowns and entered halftime with a 14-6 lead. Tight end Benji Gosnell took the lead with a 20-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Kyron Drones. The Hokies followed with a surprise trick play, as wide receiver Jaylin Lane connected with Draughns for a 6-yard touchdown reception. Gosnell finished the game as the Hokies’ top receiver with five catches for 59 yards.

Virginia Tech’s defense continued to improve in the second half. Linebacker Kelly Lawson picked off a pass from Georgia Tech’s Zach Pyron in the third quarter and returned it 14 yards. The play marked Lawson’s third career pick and second against the Yellow Jackets.

The Hokies capitalized on the turnover with a 1-yard touchdown run by Draughns, capping off a great all-around performance from their quarterback. The Texas native finished the game with a rare trifecta: a throw-for, a rush-for, and a touchdown.

Late in the fourth quarter, safety Jalen Jones intercepted Aaron Philo for the second time, putting an exclamation point on a stifling defense that clinched the victory. Virginia Tech’s defense held Georgia Tech to just two field goals and kept the Yellow Jackets from the end zone all afternoon.

Next up, the Hokies are off to their November opener, scheduled to take on Syracuse in upstate New York on Saturday, Nov. 2.

They return to Lane Stadium next weekend for a highly anticipated showdown against No. 9 Clemson on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Clemson game is already sold out, so fans still looking for tickets can explore their options through SeatGeek, the official fan-to-fan marketplace for the Virginia Tech Athletics. Game times have not yet been announced, but stay informed.
