ATLANTA — Georgia Tech associate head coach of special teams Ricky Brumfield, who did not attend Saturday’s 21-6 loss to Virginia Tech, is no longer with the program.
Georgia Tech announced in a two-sentence statement released Tuesday that Tim Salem, a senior advisor to coach Brent Key, will assume the role of special teams coach. Georgia Tech has not disclosed the reason for Brumfield’s dismissal.
Key has criticized the special teams woes as the Yellow Jackets have lost two straight games. Key did not say after Saturday’s game why Brumfield was not on the team.

The Yellow Jackets’ special teams issues were evident in a 31-13 loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 19. Notre Dame thwarted a 35-yard field goal attempt by Aidan Barr, and Georgia Tech missed another attempt on a dropped snap. The Yellow Jackets also allowed a 27-yard gain on Notre Dame’s fake punt.
Coach Key said after the game, “Our special teams over the past three weeks have not lived up to expectations.”
In response to a question last week that suggested special teams were “sort of” an issue, Key said “not really,” adding: “There was nothing special.”
Key also said the special teams play was “unacceptable” and that “we’re going to make the necessary adjustments. … And that’s the decision I have to make and the decision I made.” Ta.
Georgia Tech (5-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) has this week off and will play No. 5 Miami on Nov. 9.
