Regulations state that vehicles that do not pass a compliance test cannot be driven on the road. For cars, the test will be held 15 years after the date of registration. NEW DELHI: In a major relief to owners of transport vehicles such as trucks and buses, the road transport ministry has decided to extend the deadline for mandatory physical fitness tests at automatic testing stations (ATS) by six months. Previous deadline was October 1, 2024
TOI has learned that the decision has been taken considering that there are currently only 81 ATSs operational in the country, of which 24 are in Gujarat. Some states don’t even have a single operational ATS. Approximately 184 ATS units are under construction and could take several more months to become operational. Officials say the main reason for pushing up the schedule a second time is that there aren’t enough such centers. By law, commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks and taxis must be fitness tested every two years until they are eight years old, and annually thereafter.
Regulations state that vehicles that do not pass a compliance test cannot be driven on the road. For cars, the test will be held 15 years after the date of registration. ATS ensures that there is no human intervention during testing and that the reports are factual.
