CNN —

Former first lady Melania Trump says in her upcoming memoir that she supports the right to abortion “free from government interference or pressure,” according to an excerpt of the book obtained by the Guardian.

“Why should anyone other than women themselves have the power to decide what to do with their bodies? A woman’s fundamental right to personal freedom over her own life gives her the right to terminate a pregnancy if she wishes. It empowers us,” she writes in the book, which is scheduled to be released on October 8, less than a month before Election Day.

“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to denying her control over her own body,” the former first lady said, according to a report in the Guardian. I’ve believed that ever since.” ”

“It is essential that we guarantee women the autonomy to decide whether to have children based on their own beliefs, free from interference or pressure from the government,” she wrote, according to the Guardian.

She also wrote in the book that she disagreed with her husband on some aspects of immigration policy, the Guardian reported.

The memoir reportedly details the former first lady’s childhood and her relationship with her husband, former President Donald Trump, who is now the Republican presidential candidate.

Abortion is a key issue in the 2024 election, with Donald Trump announcing this week that if re-elected he would veto a federal abortion ban “because it’s up to each state to decide based on the will of their voters.” He said he intended to implement the

Trump’s pledge, in the form of a social media post during the CBS vice presidential debate, comes as Democrats continue to focus on the former president’s role in revoking national abortion rights protections as a key campaign issue. It was held in President Trump has appointed three people to the U.S. Supreme Court who will be key to overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. The ruling led to a patchwork of state-level abortion regulations, including restrictive laws in several battleground states that could decide the 2024 election.

President Trump has recently begun to portray himself as a “protector” of women, claiming at a rally in Pennsylvania last month that American women would not “think about abortion” if he were elected. did.

Melania Trump has kept a low profile throughout her husband’s 2024 presidential campaign, making only a handful of public appearances since the former president began his third bid for the White House.

The former first lady’s office announced in August that her memoir, Melania, would be published this fall, calling it a “powerful and inspiring story of a woman who forged her own path, overcame adversity, and defined personal excellence.” “A story,” he explained.

CNN’s Kate Sullivan contributed to this report.
