“To get innovative results, and also to be able to apply for grants, you need the latest technology and the latest equipment, because you can’t say you have the best technology to do the job. ‘You’re more likely to get a grant,’ she said.
He said the roadmap would ensure centralized funding for equipment to ensure researchers have the latest tools they need.
Damania also noted that federal agencies often require each institution to match a portion of their capital funding, and the roadmap establishes a capital fund to ensure UNC can meet those obligations. He said he plans to do so.
Damania said a second priority focuses on fostering growth and opportunity in areas such as cancer and infectious diseases, where UNC has done significant research. He said the roadmap also aims to expand into future areas such as artificial intelligence in brain and behavior and health.
“This is not a specific project, but it is close to the areas they are focused on. They want to maintain the strengths we already have while expanding on them,” Damania said. he said.
The roadmap’s third priority is maximizing the value of UNC’s research. Layla Dowdy, Director of Communications for the Research Office, leads one of three teams in the goal. He said there had previously been gaps in communication with stakeholders, but the roadmap was working to fill them.
“State legislatures are important partners in our growth, and we need to better engage with them,” she said. “So a big goal is to work with the Department of State and the Office of Federal Affairs on some new ways that we can communicate our values to those people.”
Gordon-Larsen said that at the administrative and broader level, the research roadmap aims to bring researchers together to brainstorm ideas and provide the funding opportunities and resources needed for those studies. Ta.
Damania said the roadmap will highlight the research being done at UNC and have a positive impact on the researchers behind the projects.
“This will help showcase their accomplishments and help them expand and grow,” she said.
