Your ultimate goal in Frostpunk 2 is to survive. The end of the world is tough: food crops are drying up, the weather is getting worse, and fuel for generators and heaters is running dangerously low. It’s a challenging game. But with the right idea – and out of this world technology – you can survive and thrive. Build your lab in Frostpunk 2 and thrive!
How to build a research institute
To build a Laboratory, you first need a residential district. A Research Center is a building that is an enhancement to the district building system designed to increase research speed within the Ideas tree. The more Laboratories you build (up to one per residential district), the faster you’ll be able to research additional technologies.
Either way, you can find the Research Institute in the buildings menu at the bottom right of your HUD. It’s the icon that looks like a building or stack of boxes. It’s under Housing.

To construct a real building you need:
400 Labor 100 Heat Stamping 50 Prefab
From there, you would need a workforce of 400 people to keep the building running, plus heat for another 40. That’s why the laboratory is best located in a residential area, near a central district where the generators are located.

The Ideas tree in Frostpunk 2 is huge and is divided into 6 categories: Heating, Resources, Frostlands, City, Society and Hub. You can only research one project at a time, so choose carefully. It can take days or weeks to complete an idea, during which time it can change your settlement a lot. Here are some things we recommend you focus on first:
Coal Mine (Heating) Home Insulation (Heating) Factory (Resource) Coal Factory (Resource) Greenhouse (Resource) Housing Block (City) Maintenance Duty (City) Hospital (Social) Youth (Social) Maintenance Hub (Hub) Emergency Medical Hub (Hub)
Of course, you might want to specialize your city, and that’s totally fine – feel free to choose a completely unique path as you research new ideas in Frostpunk 2.
If you want to build additional settlement districts, you’ll need more food to keep up with the growing population in Frostpunk 2. Don’t forget to stop by the official Insider Gaming forums to discuss the game and similar games.
