HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech football team scored 17 points in the second quarter and 19 in the second half to win 39-9 against Northern Michigan at Curley Stadium on Hall of Fame weekend. They won the Miners Cup 14 times in a row. on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies overcame a two-game losing streak to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Wildcats remain winless with an 0-8 overall record and 0-4 in the league.
“It’s great for the players in our dressing room now to come out of a tough two weeks and win the Minors Cup. The focus in all aspects of getting ready and trying to get back on track was great.” all week,” Tech head coach Dan Metluck said. “We came into the game and were probably too excited. We lacked execution in the first quarter, especially on offense, so it was a little frustrating, but it was a great win for the team and the 14th straight win for our program. It was an incredible thing to do.” ”
The Huskies scored on their first drive of the game, with freshman kicker Avery Kucharski converting the longest field goal of her career, a 42-yard field goal, for the only points they got in the first frame. Sophomore running back Jake Rueff gained 34 yards on his first three carries and had his first run of the day for 25 yards.
Tech’s offense picked up steam in the second quarter after the Wildcats connected on a 31-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-all less than 90 seconds into the game. MTU scrambled to respond, with quarterback Alex Freese hitting Darius Willis for a 39-yard gain on the second play of the drive and a 25-yard touchdown to a wide-open Brandon Michalak downfield and Kucharski. scored an extra point to make it 10 points. “Preparing this week is different than any other week and it’s a great time,” Michalak said. “Everything has to do with the trust my coaches have in me and the relationship I have with my quarterback. I can’t do that without my offensive line and quarterback. I’m just grateful at the end of the day because I was able to do it. ”
Freshman wide receiver Jackson Lippert returned a punt home 78 yards to spark the Huskies, jumping out to a 17-7, two-touchdown lead with 8:57 left in the first half. Lippert’s punt return touchdown was the Huskies’ first in 12 years.

The Huskies held Northern Michigan to just 19 yards on 16 plays in the second quarter, and Kucharski made his second field goal of the day to make it 20-3 with 40 seconds left in the first half. After the field goal, Patrick Kastner recovered the Wildcats’ muffled punt, but the Huskies were unable to convert the turnover into a score.
Coming out of halftime, Michigan Tech again rushed and scored, going 77 yards in just four plays, before a 58-yard bomb from Fries to Michalak raced down the middle of the field, reaching the end zone and finishing unscathed. It was emphasized that the decision was made. The score was 26-3.

The teams went three-and-out over the next four drives, but Northern Michigan gained just 34 yards in the first seven minutes and was forced to punt away to end the third quarter.
Michigan Tech outgained Northern Michigan University with 18 plays and 126 yards in the final frame of the game compared to their opponent’s 14 plays and 87 yards. Huskies redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Bueno had a combined 60-yard rush on the opening drive of the quarter and a 34-yard rush to the end zone on his second drive to make it 32-3. Running back Colby Hindenach gained 24 yards on two carries in the stanza.
Bueno also had his second career touchdown pass, a 12-yard pass along the home sideline to wide receiver Ethan Hull, and Kucharski connected on the extra point to make it 39-3 with 6:39 left. The drive started at the 50-yard line, with Bueno rushing 10 yards for a 24-yard pass to freshman Bryce Klunts, then a toss to Hull.
The Wildcats found the end zone on Welch-Tucker’s 33-yard rush on a drive that took more than five minutes to go 79 yards, but the Huskies won their 51st series and their 14th straight victory. There’s no meaning. Miners Cup, 19th Traveling Trophy in 22 years.
Fries threw for 221 yards on 11-of-24 completion with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Michalak led the wide receiver room with three receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Bueno ran four times for 70 yards and had a 34-yard rushing touchdown and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hull.
Defensively, Porter Zieman led the Huskies with a team-leading eight total tackles (five solo, three assists). Owen Watson had two sacks for 19 yards and 3.5 total tackles for loss. Hunter Buchel and Josh Cribben added three tackles for a loss on the day.
Brenden Luck, the nation’s best punter, had a quiet day, punting twice for 97 yards and averaging 48.5 yards per punt.
