HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Technological University volleyball team defeated Davenport 3-0 on Saturday at SDC Gym to earn a weekend split. The Huskies won 26-24, 25-23, 25-20, improving to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC.

“We wanted to end the weekend with something solid. There’s no shame in parting ways with Ferris and Davenport,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “I thought some of the games we played last night were good enough to win, and we played well today. We’re looking forward to being home again next weekend.”

Tech took a three-point lead in the first set, but Davenport stayed close and took a set point lead at 24-22. The Huskies relied on their veterans to get out of trouble with back-to-back kills from Meg Rabe, and a kill from Casey Miners gave them the home set point, with Raabe knocking down the winner. The Huskies hit .485 in the first frame with three different players recording at least four kills.

The Huskies built a six-point advantage midway through the second set, but the Panthers didn’t run away either, and the score was tied at 22. Tech led 2-0 at the break after a kill by Meg Rabe and two errors by players. Davenport. Bryn Erickson had 10 digs in the second, and Rabe and Rachel Zurek had three kills.

The Black & Gold took control late in the third set with a 5-0 run on the serve of Jacqueline Yancey. The attack was spread out with five different Huskies scoring two kills. Yancey’s kill to set point, followed by a Panthers miscue on the other side of the net, gave Tech its second sweep of the season.

Meg Rabe had a match-high 11 kills while hitting .379. Rachel Zurek (9), Casey Miners (7) and Paige Wagner (6) all had five or more kills and batted above .300. Tess Hayes had 35 assists and a career-high 18 goals.

The Huskies will remain at home next weekend, playing against Lake Superior State on Friday and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.
