HISTORY HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Technological University hockey team lost 2-1 to Clarkson in overtime on Saturday at McInnes Student Ice Arena. The Golden Knights scored on a power play with 17.1 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory.
“I thought we played well,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “We did some line juggling and established our identity a little bit. Both goalies played really well and their goalies made another save.
“A lot of our young players are still learning how to control the game, but we just couldn’t execute the power play.”
Like Friday night, there was no scoring in the first inning. Clarkson took the lead 6 minutes, 48 seconds into the break on Ryan Taylor’s power-play goal from Ellis Rickwood.
At 15:28 of the second period, Tech’s Chase Pietila made a shot through traffic to score the tying goal, his second of the season and fifth of his career. Tom Leppa scored his first collegiate point with an assist from Nick Williams.
Pietila thought he had scored at the end of the second period, but the puck went into the net after time expired.
The story of this game was Tech’s inability to score on the power play. The Huskies went on a power play with 42.8 points left in regulation, but one shot went wide and the other two were blocked.
The Golden Knights (5-2) blocked two more shots in overtime, negating the penalty kick. They started a power play of their own with 58 seconds left, and Ryan Richardson ended the game with a sharp-angled one-timer with 17.1 seconds left.
Tech (2-2) led in shots 35-33 in the game. Derek Malahy made his first start for the Huskies and made 31 saves. Ethan Langenegger stopped 34 shots for the visiting team.
The Huskies were 0-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
