UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Each year, the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) brings together faculty, students, and industry experts to foster innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration through an annual symposium.
This year’s event, ICDS Day MMXXIV: Shaping the Future of Penn State’s Digital Research, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the HUB Alumni Hall.
ICDS Day brings together a diverse community to discuss cutting-edge methodologies, data analysis, available computational resources, and how to synergize data ethics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and research opportunities. We aim to learn about.
“ICDS Day promises to be an exciting and insightful event,” said ICDS Interim Operations Director Wolf Hey. “Highlights of ICDS Day include sessions on AI, research excellence, and funding strategies. The day concludes with a student poster session and networking event, which will bring together researchers, industry experts, and students. This is a great opportunity for us to connect, share ideas, and contribute to the evolving landscape of data science at Penn State.”
Participants will spend the day interacting with experts who conduct research using data and computational science resources. ICDS co-employers will host a panel discussion on successful projects in AI, visualization, and custom/high-throughput computing.
Graduate students will present their computational and data science research findings in evening sessions that are also designed as a space for networking.
“One morning session is relevant to faculty who need creative ways to obtain sponsor funding for research computing and storage,” said ICDS co-recruiter and physics professor Chad Hanna. , about how they are approaching the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other sponsors to obtain these resources, and how ICDS can help.
Along with Hannah, attendees will learn lessons about the complexities of the large-scale project proposal process from ICDS’ other co-employer, chemistry professor Edward O’Brien. Dr. Keith Chen, Distinguished Professor of Pathology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Pharmacology; Dr. Vasant Honavar, Professor of Information Science and Technology and Deputy Director, ICDS. and Dr. Saunder Kumara, Pierce Professor of Industrial Manufacturing Engineering and director of the Industrial Applications Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIMI).
Mehrdad Mahdavi, director of the AI Hub, will update the Penn State community on the direction of the hub and explore how it can strengthen AI connectivity within and beyond the university.
Research ideas in AI, cyberinfrastructure, data and/or computational science will continue to be celebrated in flash talks by researchers.
Researchers from across Pennsylvania submitted research proposals to be presented at ICDS Day. The selected Principal Investigator (PI) will have the opportunity to engage with participants on how to turn their ideas into a series of achievable next steps.
“This event is a very exciting opportunity for brainstorming and seeding interdisciplinary research ideas,” said Christel Wauthier, associate professor of geosciences and co-employer and deputy director of ICDS. .
Registration for this event is now open. Visit the ICDS website for the full event agenda and information on how to submit your research for presentation.
