New Delhi: The Indian Cancer Genome Atlas (ICGA) has announced the launch of a comprehensive cancer multi-omics data portal that will provide open access to clinically correlated data of cancer patients in India and aid in cancer research and treatment for Indians.

“The portal will provide data including DNA, RNA and protein profiles of breast cancer patients integrated with clinical outcomes. Currently, the platform comprises data of 50 breast cancer patients and is expected to expand to over 500 patients in the next year. The data will be freely accessible to the global research community under India’s PRIDE guidelines, which promote ethical sharing and collaboration in cancer research,” ICGA said.

Historically, cancer treatment in India has relied on Western datasets, but this India-specific dataset will help researchers and clinicians develop personalised treatment protocols, the organisation added.

“Cancer affects us all and there is an urgent need for more effective and personalised treatments, especially those tailored to India’s unique genetic and environmental factors. This portal will provide researchers with critical data to advance customised cancer research for better treatment outcomes,” said Dr Anand Deshpande, Chairman and Managing Director, Persistent and Non-Executive Director, ICGA.

“Understanding the genomes of cancer patients will improve care for Indians not only in India but around the world. We encourage others with similar data to contribute actively to ICGA so that this effort can grow even more rapidly and make greater progress,” Dr. JC Zenkrusen, Director of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Professor Sunil Badbe, Vice Chair, Pathology-Oncology Program, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, said in a joint statement.
