The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT) Roorkee has signed two major agreements with Samarkand State University (SamSU), boosting academic collaboration between India and Uzbekistan.
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Samarkand State University have signed two major agreements to strengthen ties between India and Uzbekistan.
The two agreements include a letter of intent to establish a Joint Master’s Programme (JMDP) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote research and collaboration in hydrology, environmental sciences, sustainable energy and the SDGs.
The JMDP has been jointly developed by the Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and the Department of Hydrometeorology, Samsung Autonomous University, to address key global issues such as water scarcity, climate change and environmental degradation.

Additionally, it equips SamSU students and faculty with advanced expertise in water resource management modeling and sustainability.
Moreover, IIT Roorkee will be able to leverage its years of expertise and experience to provide practical solutions to real-life problems in hydrology and related fields in Uzbekistan, as announced in a press release.
Meanwhile, the agreement was signed by Prof. Halmuradov Rustam Ibragimovic, Rector, Samsung Electronics University and Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, in the presence of faculty members from both the universities.

Speaking at the event, Prof Pant said the collaboration will contribute to sustainable solutions to water and environmental challenges and enhance academic excellence and societal impact.
Similarly, Professor Ibragimović stressed that the agreement underscores the commitment of both institutions to address the pressing challenges of climate change and build an innovative research and education platform.
Other key speakers at the event included Professor Vimal Chandra Srivastava, Dean, School of International Relations, IIT Roorkee, who emphasised the importance of partnerships in expanding IIT Roorkee’s international footprint and promoting intercultural academic exchange.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mukhtur Nasirov, Vice President for International Relations at SAMSU, is excited about the potential of this collaboration to advance global environmental sustainability and collaborative innovation.
Prof Naveen Navani, Dean Academic Affairs, IIT Roorkee, said the MoU would create new opportunities for student and faculty interaction, research activities and knowledge sharing.
