Joe Jena, director of talent acquisition at 84 Lumber, says the company’s growing presence across the country offers unique career paths in the construction industry, from yard work to manager apprenticeships, for those looking to roll up their sleeves. Head Buyer Adam Nickelson: “84 Lumber’s success is a result of their hard work.”
Starting at 84 Lumber in 2017 after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Adam Nickelson began his journey as an outsider. “It was a whole new world that I knew nothing about,” he says of his early days. But through the training and support of 84 Lumber, Adam found a rewarding career. “Every day there’s something new,” he says. He wants new employees to know there are no gatekeepers here. “If you put in the work and push yourself, 84 Lumber will train you and give you all the tools to succeed.”
Nickelson also wanted to emphasize that after all these years in the industry, what he likes most about the industry is the hands-on nature of the job. As a buyer, he says, “Construction is a face-to-face industry built on relationships. I feel like other career paths tend to be done over the phone or video conferencing.”

John Buto, Area Manager: “At 84 Lumber, there’s no ceiling to your future.”
Starting out as a manager apprentice, Buto quickly rose through the ranks and is now an area manager overseeing operations in Philadelphia and the New Jersey Shore. “At 84 Lumber, your future has no ceiling,” he says. “Regardless of your position, there is always potential for growth.” But what stood out most to Buto was the company’s culture. “The best part of my job is the people,” Buto said. “My employees, colleagues, and customers make this job so rewarding, and there is nothing better than seeing my team succeed.”
Hard work is not that difficult if you surround yourself with the right people. “Everyone came together and worked hard every day to achieve a common goal: taking care of our customers.”

Heather Covari, human resources manager at 84 Lumber’s team headquarters, echoed the same sentiment as her colleagues: a welcoming, collaborative culture. “We have a culture that you can’t find anywhere else,” explains Kovaly. “No matter where we are, we all look out for each other.”
