Joe Jena, director of talent acquisition at 84 Lumber, says the company’s growing presence across the country offers unique career paths in the construction industry, from yard work to manager apprenticeships, for those looking to roll up their sleeves. Head Buyer Adam Nickelson: “84 Lumber’s success is a result of their hard work.”

Starting at 84 Lumber in 2017 after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Adam Nickelson began his journey as an outsider. “It was a whole new world that I knew nothing about,” he says of his early days. But through the training and support of 84 Lumber, Adam found a rewarding career. “Every day there’s something new,” he says. He wants new employees to know there are no gatekeepers here. “If you put in the work and push yourself, 84 Lumber will train you and give you all the tools to succeed.”

Nickelson also wanted to emphasize that after all these years in the industry, what he likes most about the industry is the hands-on nature of the job. As a buyer, he says, “Construction is a face-to-face industry built on relationships. I feel like other career paths tend to be done over the phone or video conferencing.”
