Kaylee Wendt has been a prominent figure on television throughout Buffalo for more than a decade, delivering weather forecasts as a broadcast meteorologist.
After speaking with the Corps of Engineers about the story’s background, Cary felt he was a good fit for the Buffalo District role. She worked on her resume and applied. I now have a good work-life balance, am close to home, and am able to pursue my passion as a multimedia specialist.
Kaylee talked about her background and path to joining USACE.
Q: Where are you from?
Kaylee: I grew up in Western New York. Specifically, I lived in several different areas scattered throughout Niagara County. That’s where I still live!
Q: What school did you study?
Kaylee: I studied meteorology at the State University of New York at Brockport and earned my Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in broadcast meteorology.
Q: How did you find out about the position at USACE?
Kayley: I have worked in television as a broadcast meteorologist for the past 10+ years. Part of that work includes reporting on stories surrounding environmental science in the local community. One of the stories I covered was the flooding that occurred along the shores of Lake Ontario in 2019. I needed to find an expert to interview about rising water levels, and I went to the Army Corps of Engineers for that resource. While I was interviewing, I thought to myself, “I feel like this job is right in front of me.” I returned to the office and immediately found and connected with the person I was interviewing with on LinkedIn.
From that moment on, I built a resume and applied multiple times through USA Jobs. This year, thanks to the cooperation of many people, I was able to find the role that was perfect for me. Working as a multimedia specialist on the Buffalo Area Public Relations team combines my love for the environment with my passion for communications.
Q: What motivated you to take the position in the Buffalo area?
Kaylee: I was ready for a change of pace, and the position with the Buffalo District Public Relations team came at the right time in my life. I love the fact that I can pursue the next chapter of my career while staying close to home and family. Having a good work-life balance is very important to me, and the Corps of Engineers delivers on that value.
Q: What are your goals in your new role?
Kayley: We want the public to know more about the impactful work the Army Corps of Engineers does locally and nationally. Getting attention to these important projects will give you a sense of purpose like you’ve never felt before in your career.
I also want to grow by continuing to step outside of my comfort zone and expand my knowledge of the Corps of Engineers and its projects.
Q: What are your hobbies, extracurricular activities, interesting fun facts, and other things you like to do in your free time?
Kaylee: A fun fact about me is that I can recite all of the American presidents in under 30 seconds (thanks to my 4th grade teacher!) Another fun fact is that I spent two weeks chasing storms in college. .
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, watching shows on Bravo, reading, and spending time with my friends, family, and my dog, Reggiano.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Kaylee: I’m excited to learn a whole new industry, but it comes with a lot of questions. I hope my new colleagues will be patient with me as I navigate this new path in my career.
