Mark Sanderlin has lived in Hell’s Kitchen for 13 years and has recorded over 250 audiobooks as a voice actor. Most of it was recorded in a booth in my apartment. This is Mark’s West Side Story.

So what’s the New York story? Were you born here or did you just come here?
I grew up in Oregon, went to college on Long Island, and moved to the city right after graduation. I lived around the city for several years before finally settling in Hell’s Kitchen. I’ve lived here for about 13 years!
What was your first job? what are you doing now?
Like most creatives, I’ve had a million different careers. Jewelry store clerk, heat lamp factory worker, office manager, professional choir member, baby music teacher, jazz club critic, songwriter. These days, I work as a professional voice actor, mainly narrating audiobooks.
What is your favorite moment (or moments) in New York so far?
I’ve been through a lot over the years, but this year I was able to see Elton John perform at the opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, which was an absolute treat. This summer, while walking along the Hudson River, a close second to the New York City jet ski break-in occurred. I had no idea what was going on, but it really looked like a group of jet skis had invaded.

Why do you love Hell’s Kitchen?
I love the walkability, the access to Broadway theaters, the proximity to just about every type of cuisine imaginable, and the proximity to just about every subway line you need. I love being able to eat a world-class dinner, watch a Broadway show, have a nightcap on the rooftop with an amazing view, and return to my apartment 15 minutes later at the end of the night.
What is your superpower or hidden talent?
It gives a creepy impression like Kermit the Frog.
What else should we know about you?
I’ve narrated over 250 audiobooks for all the major publishers, most of which were recorded in a booth in my living room. I also write and perform original music under Artist Project Lyon Hart.
Mark’s Favorite Hell’s Kitchen Place
Nizza — 630 9th Ave (bw W44/45th St)
Bartender Anthony makes the best espresso martinis in the city.

9th Avenue Saloon — 656 9th Ave (bw W45/46th St)
I’m so glad the 9th Street Saloon survived the pandemic and was renovated. Friendly staff and regular customers. Who doesn’t like a low-key local bar?
Longo Brothers — 474 9th Ave (bw W36/37th St)
I love the cocktails and pasta here. Living in the southern tip of Hong Kong, I love having upscale date spots nearby. Mark sits outside Longo Brothers on Ninth Avenue (West 36th/37th Street). Photo: Katie Savage
Finn’s Bagels — 477 10th Ave (bw W36/37th St)
A delicious spot to enjoy a bagel and coffee on the weekend before taking a stroll along the High Line.
Astros Dog Run — 525 10th Ave (bw W39/40th St)
The Astros have been my dog Roman’s home base since he came to New York in 2016. I’m sad to see it demolished to make way for the new Port Authority, but I hope the community board finds a great new building. Many dog locations in the area.

Westway Diner — 614 9th Ave (bw W43/44th St)
The best no-frills classic New York breakfast in the neighborhood. Coffee is in hand before sitting down.
Frame — 550 9th Ave (bw W40/41st St)
I just finished my second season of bowling with Big Apple Recreational Sports. BARS is a great organization and I have met so many great new friends through bowling and kickball. Mark plays in the BARS Bowling League for the Frames. Photo provided
