MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – The Bethel University women’s volleyball team currently holds an overall record of 14-8, and one player on the team achieved a major accomplishment for the program.
Middle blocker Maddie Payne recently achieved a major milestone by surpassing 700 career blocks and becoming Bethel’s all-time leader in blocks.
“Sometimes it feels unreal,” Payne says. “When I think about it, I’m like, ‘What?’” Did I really do that? ‘But again, I really think this is a testament to how hard I’ve worked over the years leading up to high school and is actually just a platform to give all the glory to God . I wouldn’t be anywhere without him. ”
The local Northwood High School graduate reflects on how Northwood High School shaped her.
“I have coaches who challenge me in a lot of ways, not just athletically, but mentally and as a person,” Payne said. “I think this prepared me to go to college and be successful.”
When it comes to her training regimen, a variety of factors come together to help her feel her best every day.
“Again, it takes hours of dedication, focus and effort,” Payne said. “It’s time outside of practice, but it’s also time when I’m not even practicing or playing volleyball. I go to the gym, do muscle training, injury prevention, and conditioning, and spend time with my athletic trainer Sara, and I feel like my body is in good shape. It’s about making sure you’re healthy and eating well. All of that goes into it.”
Her contribution extends beyond performance. Her head coach also recognizes the great impact she has on the team’s dynamics and culture.
“They are her biggest fans and are really excited for her,” coach Erika Dregitz said. “A block or a Maddie Payne kill can light up the whole court.”
Payne is 23 kills away from becoming Bethel’s all-time kill leader.
Bethel will travel to Grand Rapids on Friday for back-to-back games against Aquinas College and Judson College. Click here for more information on the team’s schedule.
