CHERRY POINT, N.C. (WITN) – Dirt and grass are in the air as officials, Marines and contractors break ground on a brand-new fitness facility center that will open its doors to those stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in the fall. thrown in. In 2026.

A new facility center to replace the current temporary 13,260-square-foot Devil Dog gym, originally a converted warehouse, has been talked about for nearly 30 years.

The new fitness center will be a 93,000 square foot, one-story building. There will also be an aquatic center, indoor track facility and even a rock climbing wall.

Commander Christopher Over, Cherry Point facility director, said the new facility will be a morale-boosting step.

“They will have a hard time staying patient as construction continues…The new facility will combine all fitness and aquatic facilities into one building, providing Marines and Sailors with state-of-the-art opportunities. ‘Train as hard as you can,’ says Cherry Point CMDR Christopher Over.

MCAS Cherry Point and Whiting Turner Contracting Company have partnered to build a facility inspired by university fitness facilities aimed at creating a mecca for sports warriors and Marines, said Civil Chief Operations Officer said Jonathan Mason.

But Mason said a new fire station and many other projects are currently underway at MCAS Cherry Point.

“Over $1 billion has been invested in Cherry Point alone, new theater projects are underway, we’re also working on new hangars. There’s a lot of construction going on in Cherry Point and a lot of great things happening. ,” Mason says.

The new facility will cost $57.7 million and construction could begin as early as next week.
