BEL PRE, Ohio (WTAP) — It was an exciting day in Bel Pre, where Memorial Health System broke ground on a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The special day was celebrated with performances from local schools and guest speakers.

“In addition to the hospital, a clinic building will be constructed that will house pediatric subspecialists such as pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, and pediatric behavioral health. ” said Scott Cantlay, President and CEO of Memorial Health System.

The hospital will also include the region’s first NICU unit. Having this local facility allows children to receive treatment here instead of having to be transported hours away.

“The addition of a women’s and children’s campus here in Belpre will allow moms and babies and dads and moms to be together, even if their children have special needs and need a little extra care. ” Cantley said.

This is a $125 million project made entirely possible by local businesses, the state of Ohio, and private donations from Akron Children’s Hospital.

“The state of Ohio, which has 30 million Akron kids, is giving 40 million, and of course the rest is from our individual donations like the ones we talked about today and the capital campaigns that are coming up. and of course Memorial will work with the federal government to raise the remaining funds. ” Cantley said.

Memorial Health System is working with other organizations to begin construction of a women’s and children’s hospital in Belpre. The target opening date is the end of 2026.
