Former NFL running back Merrill Hoge appears on Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla to talk about the inspiration behind his book, Find a Way: Three Words That Changed My Life.
I never expected disaster to occur somewhere along my life’s journey. When I was 30 years old, that disaster struck me and I completely lost my career and had to start my life over again from 30 years old. And perhaps there he learned more about the responsibility of taking charge of his own life. I sat there for almost a month. I was scolded by the doctors. I was angry at the Bears and I was angry at the National Football League. Every person you can think of was mad at me. And none of that changed where I am and where I need to go in the future. It was my responsibility to get up off that couch and take that first step. And, you know, I’ve actually worked with the government on a lot of different programs around mental health. And regardless of the programs ever created, I don’t discount help from others, nor do I need help from others with other resources. But we’ll get to that in a moment. But the first step is whether you take ownership, take action, and do something about your situation. Once that starts, well, other people start to play a role. As you know, different programs that you may need depending on the details. But the value of ownership is that it is indestructible. If you command it, live it, and do it, you will have everything you need and help along the way. I always tell people that no matter where I’ve been and what I’ve done, people have challenged me and inspired others to find hope. But it always started with me. And where do you want to go, what do you want to do, and what do you want to become? I have a responsibility to take action. And I like to say that when people start doing that, that’s when you’re really rewarded in life. No one will give you any prizes for doing so, but you will receive sustainable and lasting peace, joy, happiness, and personal success in life. And I learned it. I have probably learned more from life’s challenges than I did from the success of my dreams and adventures, or about my dreams and goals in the first place. ”
