GULFPORT, Mich. (WLOX) – For some employers in the auto industry, it’s all gas and no brakes.

That’s why Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College hosted its second annual Automotive Technology Open House event.

“If you want a job, there will be a job almost 100 percent of the time. Basically, what we’re seeing is employers coming in and they’re choosing to hire our students. ,” said Monica Donohue, dean of the College of Teaching and Learning.

Opportunities range from automotive technology, collision repair, paint and bodywork, marine multicraft and more.

“There is a huge demand for diesel technicians right now. 100% of students who want to work are actually employed and part-time with industry partners before they finish my program.” said instructor Benjamin Bowman.

Students at the Harrison County campus can complete courses in automotive technology and collision repair in as little as 10 months.

In the meantime, they continue their internships and practicums.

“They actually work part-time on the dealership floor, as interns with our industry partners, while they’re in school, or we have what we call an apprenticeship model, which is actually in the second and third semesters. You take classes for two days and spend the rest of the day working in the field at a dealership to refine your trades. In addition to in-class instruction, it’s important to have mentors from the industry,” says Donahue.

Benjamin Bowman is a heavy duty diesel instructor who teaches commercial trucks and heavy construction equipment.

Bowman was also once a student in these same courses.

“Being part of this program and having tangible proof that I know what I’m doing has opened a lot of doors for me. I was able to get a paying job and a better job,” Bowman says.

Students can also learn more about scholarships and financial aid available for both courses.

Current or prospective MGCCC students interested in a career in the automotive industry are encouraged to register for the spring program as soon as possible to eliminate waitlists.
