(CBS Detroit) More than 2,700 health care workers at Michigan Medicine have sent a strike notice to hospital management and management.

The workers, represented by the Service Employees International Union Michigan Healthcare Union (SEIU HCMI), will go on a one-day strike on October 15, according to the announcement.

Almost 98% of the group voted to call a strike.

The workers are demanding higher wages and the restoration of benefits stripped away during the pandemic, the statement said. Negotiations for the first union contract began a year ago.

“We remain focused on our goal of achieving a successful contract resolution, and negotiations are ongoing,” said SEIU HCMI Deputy Director Larry Alcoff.

“Michigan Health University regrets that SEIU has announced the strike, but is confident that an agreement can be reached without disrupting operations. Workers formed a union in two stages, with a majority of the group recognized in March.
