MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — About 600 students at North Elementary School received visits from several Morgantown-area organizations Thursday to learn about different routes they can take in their future careers.

Officials from the city’s Department of Public Works, Fire Department, Police Department, Morgantown Municipal Airport and more stopped by the second annual “Touch a Truck” event.

During the event, students hopped into different vehicles, blared sirens, made announcements and honked their horns, learning about the people behind the trucks they see around town.

“This is so important to community support, especially for police and fire departments. We hope these young people will one day grow up and join us in a variety of career fields across the city. We hope so,” said Megan Deeley, deputy director of engineering for public works.

The students in attendance were very excited to be there and explore these careers tactilely. “I think it’s great because it might open them up to a career that they didn’t even know existed, and they were really kind. The kids are so appreciative and grateful. It’s great. . It opens new doors,” fourth grade teacher Angie Harris said.

Officials with the event said the goal is to continue visiting different schools in the area each year.
