HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech football team lost 2-0 to UP rival Northern Michigan on Friday at Curley Stadium.
“I thought we had the energy and effort that we needed to come out ahead and compete against our rivals. We just didn’t have the last piece of the puzzle,” Tech soccer coach Melissa Kuhar said. Ta. “We relied on a lot of people to play a heavy game right now because of the lack of subs and injuries. Northern are a good team, credit to them. They did what they had to do and did really well. Michigan Tech (4-6, 2-5 GLIAC) was held to 13 shots and nine shots on target by Northern Michigan’s (7-2-2, 5-1-1 GLIAC) heavy attack. However, they were limited to just four shots on goal. The winning streak extended to six games.
Northern Michigan looked good less than three minutes into the game, but NMU’s leading scorer Justina Lesperance’s shot hit the crossbar.
Both teams were scoreless for the first 41 minutes of the game, but an untimely yellow card for Michigan Tech gave Northern Michigan a free kick past midfield to the Huskies’ defenders. Brooke Pietila took a long shot, but the shot bounced once deep inside the 6th half and ended up in the back of the goal, leaving the Huskies with a one-point lead heading into halftime.
Michigan Tech had three shots on goal in the second half, but none of them were a threat.
Northern Michigan’s balanced offense made seven shots on three corner kicks. Fifteen minutes into the second period, a Huskies turnover on defense led to the second Wildcat goal of the day. The pressure-inducing turnover made it 2-1 for the Wildcats, with Molly Pistorius tipping the ball to L’Esperance, who chipped it wide of the net and past the MTU goalie to make it 2-0. I decided.
For the Huskies, Julia Pietila, Riley Winrich, Molly Bolang and Clara Murchison all had shots on goal, while Bry Burrows found the net and made seven saves.
Justina Lesperance paced NMU with five shots, three on goal, and freshman goalie Sally Patton had four stops en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

The Huskies are scheduled to begin the second round of GLIAC competition next week on the road, traveling to Davenport on Friday for a 2 p.m. start and Ferris State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
