Neri Oxman, a former MIT professor and recipient of the 2018 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, has launched a new business based in New York City called OXMAN Lab.
Oxman, who promises a “radically new kind of design practice” and is collaborating with Foster & Partners on the 36,000 square foot space on Manhattan’s 11th Avenue, calls the company “creating new technologies.” “A company of design and innovation.” We provide products and environments across a variety of scales and applications, from the molecular scale to the urban scale. ”

The initiative will be driven by three main project areas and corresponding platforms. According to a press release from OXMAN Lab, the project throughout “advocates synergy between biology and technology, towards products and buildings designed for the immediate and long-term well-being of human civilization and the natural world.” “Proceed.”

The first, Oo (pronounced “oh-zero”), focuses on product manufacturing and is described as a “vertically integrated approach to biopolymer design.” The second, EDEN, focuses on ecological design of structures and landscapes. The third, ALEF, aims to explore the potential of agricultural production and counter monoculture conditions that are known to destabilize ancient ecosystems.

OXMAN further adds that its lab space is “one of the most advanced digital fabrication facilities in New York City.” The space includes a robot shop, wet lab, gallery space, and planner space, and is equipped to accommodate a diverse staff of 133 engineers and scientists with a variety of educational backgrounds and expertise. .

Oxman left the MIT Media Lab to found OXMAN in 2020 after more than three years as a tenured professor.
