MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Muscatine Historic Preservation Commission recently received a qualified local government grant to investigate Underground Railroad and anti-slavery activities throughout Muscatine and Muscatine County.
The goal of this project is to research and document the history of this area and identify locations in the county that are associated with it. The group will start with information previously collected by the Iowa Freedom Trail Project and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
Through this study, the Muscatine Historic Preservation Commission will be able to recommend sites for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
Anyone interested in learning more about this project is invited to a meeting on Monday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m., in the council chambers of Muscatine City Hall. The group is also looking for people interested in volunteering for the project. The public meeting will be followed by training for prospective volunteers.
