BUTTE — Montana Tech has built a first-year program and a program that will play in the Frontier Conference next season very quickly.

In the first quarter of a nonconference game against Simpson University (Calif.) at Bob Green Field on Saturday afternoon, the 15th-ranked Odiggers scored 45 points and outscored the trailing RedHawks by 97 points. I broke it with 0.

The 97 points broke the program scoring record set in 2017, when Tech defeated MSU vs. Northern, 93-19, on Oct. 21.

Tech (5-2 overall, 2-2 in Frontier Conference play) returned to the win column a week after losing 27-21 to Montana Western in Dillon.

Levi Torgerson returned the first kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, two weeks after doing the same thing against Southern Oregon. Then, after QB Blake Sellen threw five touchdown passes for 174 yards and Landers Smith rushed for 59 yards and two scores in the first half, Tech’s first-team offense took a break in the second half.

Wyatt Alexander caught two touchdown passes, and Torgerson, Charlie Kagan and Logan Kennedy also had scoring receptions. For Tech, Christian Vetter, Ikaika Ho and Michael DeLeon scored on the ground. Backup QB Cole Wyant threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Kilgan in the third quarter.

Tech’s offense gained 626 yards, including Simpson’s 30. The Audigers forced the Redhawks to punt 10 times, but Simpson was held to nine rushing yards.

The Odiggers’ homestand continues next week when Tech University hosts Rocky Mountain University.
