History Marquette, MI – The Northern Michigan volleyball team got a big win Thursday night, finishing the season with 13 aces as they cruised to a four-set victory over rival Michigan Tech, 22-25, 25, at Vanderment Arena. tied for the most records. 23, 25-17, 25-15.
Julia Bouma led the way with five aces, followed by Allie Barlow with four. Northern currently leads the GLIAC with 112 aces.
The Wildcats also had the third-highest batting average this season at .285. Jacqueline Smith paced the match by hitting .333 with 18 kills, while Mackenzie Gruner added eight kills at a .583 clip, Megan Meyer added eight kills and Heline Behring had seven goals. A balanced attack continued, with Casey Bakke scoring six goals. Allie Barlow had 43 aces and Liesl Haugen had 17 aces on defense.
After the win, Kasey Bakke said, “I’m so proud of the team.” “We played together and everyone did their job. It’s great to see some of the things we’ve been working on come together against a quality opponent. We are excited about further opportunities to continue to get better!”
The Huskies opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first set. NMU used several 3-0 runs interspersed with long point-and-point exchanges to build a 17-11 lead. Michigan Tech came back and eventually pulled away by 21 points. The Huskies finished the game with blocks and kills and opened with a win over NMU with a batting average of .242 to .171.
NMU prevailed in the second set with a five-point run that featured three consecutive aces from Allie Barlow, after which MTU elected to take a timeout. The Wildcats kept up the pressure and produced another five-point run, leading to a Tech timeout at 16-11. The team maintained the lead with a decisive kill from Mackenzie Gruner before the Huskies fought back to tie the game at 20-20. Toward the end of the set, both teams traded points back and forth and reached set point. A kill from Casey Bakke and two aces from Julia Buuma gave the Cats a 25-23 victory. NMU had an impressive seven aces throughout the set.
The Cats rode that momentum to a 25-17 victory in the third set. Helen Beiring contributed on both sides of the ball, recording three kills in the set along with multiple blocks. Jacqueline Smith added four kills. Both teams traded points throughout the set, but the Cats were able to hold the lead for most of the match. The final point of the set came in the form of a kill by Smith, giving them a 25-17 victory. NMU added four more aces and hit .333.
The Wildcats scored five quick points in the fourth set, leading to a Tech timeout. With a strong start, NMU was able to maintain the lead and move forward. Allie Barlow played a key role in the Wildcats’ offense with three kills and seven assists in the set. NMU secured the victory with a Megan Meyer kill to bring the fourth set up 25-15.
It was Northern’s third win in the past four games against its UP rival, and its first at the new Vanderment Arena. The Green and Gold improved to 10-4 (6-1 GLIAC), while Michigan Tech fell to 8-6 (4-3 GLIAC).

The Wildcats will return to Vanderment Arena on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. to take on GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt.
