A few months ago, I watched a TV show about retired men talking. They talked about how many of their peers are in poor health because they have spent their lives chasing career success at the expense of their bodies.
It really stuck with me and reinforced some of the things I’ve been doing.
Hey, I’m all for following your dreams in your chosen career field, but at some point you have to take a step back and think, “What’s the point if I’m not healthy?”
That’s where the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA comes into play.
Taking the time to visit a health and wellness facility like ours has far greater benefits than money can buy. We are changing lives for the better here, and I witness these stories every day. And in many ways, I am part of that story.
Making a conscious effort to exercise has made a difference in my life. Especially when I graduated from college with a lot of bad habits and not in the best of health.
I try to jog outside on the Y track or on the treadmill at the Y every day. Or, if you don’t feel like jogging, head to the Y for the elliptical and strength training. The Y offers a variety of options to keep your workouts fresh. It’s already in my daily schedule so I don’t give myself the option of taking it off.
I’ve been touting the mental benefits of exercise as much as the physical benefits for years.
Nothing clears a blocked mind like a good workout. I also saw the benefits of socializing at the Y. You’ll feel better after that connection, even if it’s just a short conversation.
I can’t say I’m in perfect shape, but I do my part to keep moving forward every day.
When I moved to Marshalltown in the fall 17 years ago, it was just a few weeks before my wedding. We were so excited to have the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA become a part of our lives. I still feel that way when I see our kids swimming, playing basketball, joining sports teams, and being lifeguards at the Y.
We still have first-class facilities here at the Y, and thanks to the efforts of our annual campaign, we are open to the entire community.
Please take the time to visit the Y. Feel our sense of community and a place where everyone is welcome. That’s what has brought me back to the Y thousands of times over almost 20 years.
If I can do it, I think you can too.
