Oakton College and 160 Driving Academy held an open house on Oct. 16 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of bringing commercial driver’s license (CDL) training to Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. The event gave community leaders and prospective students an up-close look at driver’s license training. A four-week training program that prepares students for high-paying, high-demand trucking careers.
Since we partnered with 160 Driving Academy and brought this program to our Des Plaines campus in October 2023, 124 students have enrolled and 87 have earned their CDL license. Currently, employed graduates earn a combined annual income of more than $2.7 million.
“Oakton University’s CDL program is already seeing impressive results,” said Dr. Jesse Ivory, Oakton University’s assistant vice president for Workforce Innovation and College Partnerships. “This program not only meets the needs of local employers, but also provides students with a direct path to a stable and rewarding career.”
Attendees toured Oakton’s state-of-the-art CDL training facility, participated in big rig demonstrations, and interacted with instructors and current and former students. Key program benefits introduced during the event include:
Accelerated training: Students can earn their CDL in just 4 weeks, with new classes starting every Monday. Hands-on learning: Extensive on-the-job training prepares students for real-world success in the trucking industry. High job demand: With the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting more than 240,000 annual truck driver job openings through 2032, Oakton University graduates are well-positioned to meet the industry’s growing needs . High earning potential: Graduates typically earn between $35,000 and $75,000 per year, with an average hourly wage of $26.80. Employer Partnerships: Oakton’s connections with local employers such as DOT Transportation, Pace, Schneider Trucking, Village of Skokie, and Amazon give students direct access to career opportunities. Financial Support: Tuition assistance and scholarships are available to program participants on their path to the CDL. Licensing becomes more accessible and affordable.
The program’s success is also reflected in its diverse enrollment. Women make up 10% of the student body in a male-dominated industry, demonstrating Oakton University’s commitment to building a just and prosperous community.
“160 Driving Academy Des Plaines Business Development Specialist Jennifer Christopher Soule said: “It has been an incredible privilege to witness these changes firsthand. Being a part of this journey feels like my true purpose and the opportunity to have such a meaningful impact on our community.” I am honored to contribute to the mission of giving.”
