MERIDIAN, Mich. (WTOK) – Knowing what to do with your life after high school isn’t easy.
On Tuesday, second-graders from Lauderdale County School District and Meridian Public School District were able to meet with local employers.
Students were tasked with asking questions of companies in hopes of sparking interest in the field of work represented in their communities. One student said he might consider the military because it has so much to offer.
“I learned so much, just like I learned that there were women over there. She was talking about a career in the Navy and how it could pay for all of college. I want to go to college, so I’m seriously considering it, but I’m not necessarily completely sure how I’m going to do this or which school. And this gave me a clear perspective on what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” West Lauderdale sophomore Misha Murray said.
EMBDC says this is a great way to keep talent in Lauderdale County.
“Basically, after working with Lauderdale County Schools and city school counselors last year, they said, hey, 10th graders are going to be left out a little bit. We decided to conduct a career day like a speed networking type of trading, so they can get first-hand experience of trading with professionals. You can move away, but we want to. We want you to come back and let us know that there are great jobs here in Lauderdale County.” said Matt Shanrock, EMBDC Meridian Main Street Director.
More than 350 students attended the career fair, sponsored by the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation.
