PANOLA COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – Panola County District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson announced his plans to resign on Friday. He plans to retire on January 1, 2025, the statement said.
Mr. Davidson is known for his role in the cases against convicted murderer Bernie Tiede in the 1990s and 2016, and for his long service to Panola County. The incident was made into a movie, with Davidson played by actor Matthew McConaughey.
Mr. Davidson’s statement is below.
“Dear Panola County residents,
Fifty-seven years ago, I graduated from Beckville High School and left home with the goal of becoming a lawyer and returning to Panola County. I had the great honor of serving as your first county judge and have served as your criminal district attorney for the past 30 years. I now have a new goal: to spend more time with my children and grandchildren.
It is my hope and desire that my First Assistant District Attorney, Joey Venlo, fulfill his duties as Panola County Criminal District Attorney.
I am forever grateful for the support I received and the lasting friendships I made during my tenure. I will complete 50 years as a lawyer at the end of this year and am looking forward to new adventures with my family. Effective January 1, 2025, I will resign as Criminal District Attorney. I am very grateful for the wonderful honor of serving your company. May God continue to bless you and your family. ”
