New Delhi: Indian cricket stalwart Rohit Sharma recently addressed the topic of his fitness and career length and cleared the doubts of his critics.
As he approaches the important milestone of 500 international matches for India, Rohit highlighted the dedication and discipline required to sustain a 17-year top-level cricket career.
In a podcast conversation with Jitendra Choksi, Rohit spoke about the journey that brought him closer to joining the elite club of cricketers.
“Having played for 17 years and playing soon…I have now played close to 500 international matches for India. There are not many cricketers who have played 500 matches all over the world,” Rohit said. said.
Only 10 players have crossed the 500-match mark across formats and Rohit is set to become the 11th. He becomes the fifth Indian to join this exclusive list that includes legends like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
Rohit attributed his longevity to a strict routine that focuses on fitness, mental health, and preparation.
“Living this long requires some tweaking to your routine: how you manage your fitness, how you manage your mind, and how you train yourself. The thing is how you prepare for the game,” he said.
Since his journey began in 2007, Rohit has developed into one of India’s best openers and a consistent performer across formats.
“At the end of the day, our job is to be 100 per cent ready for the match and perform to win the match. And if we’re going to go back, we need fitness to prepare for that.” the pitcher added.
Additionally, Team India’s ODI and Test chief acknowledged his leadership and the high expectations that come with his on-field performance.
