Japanese businessman and philanthropist Tadashi Yanai donated $31 million to UCLA. This gift is the largest in history for UCLA’s humanities department. The bulk of the funding will be in a multifaceted effort aimed at transforming the field of humanities in Japan by promoting equitable access to research and educational resources and fostering collaboration among scholars around the world. We support “Japan Past & Present”. Through recent efforts, Yanai has donated nearly $59 million to UCLA.

Japanese businessman and philanthropist Tadashi Yanai has pledged $31 million to UCLA’s humanities department, the largest gift in the department’s history.

The gift from Yanai, chairman, president and CEO of Fast Retailing and founder of the Uniqlo clothing brand, was given to the Yanai Initiative for the Globalization of Japan’s Humanities. Ta. The initiative was founded at UCLA in 2014 with a $2.5 million gift from Yanai and operates as a partnership with Waseda University in Tokyo.

In 2020, Mr. Yanai donated $25 million to the Yanai Initiative, the largest gift ever made by an individual donor to a humanities department.

UCLA Interim President Darnell Hunt said, “In addition to Mr. Yanai’s previous significant support, his new gift will significantly advance research in the humanities in Japan and create a major center for such scholarship.” “It will solidify UCLA’s position as a global leader and contribute significantly to our global reach and influence.” . “Thanks to Mr. Yanai’s generosity, UCLA will continue to grow as a hub for scholars from around the world to come together, explore ideas, and exchange ideas, transcending political, linguistic, and cultural boundaries. ”
