Japanese businessman and philanthropist Tadashi Yanai donated $31 million to UCLA. This gift is the largest in history for UCLA’s humanities department. Japanese businessman and philanthropist Tadashi Yanai has pledged $31 million to UCLA’s humanities department, the largest gift in the department’s history.
The gift from Yanai, chairman, president and CEO of Fast Retailing and founder of the Uniqlo clothing brand, was given to the Yanai Initiative for the Globalization of Japan’s Humanities. Ta. The initiative was founded at UCLA in 2014 with a $2.5 million gift from Yanai and operates as a partnership with Waseda University in Tokyo.
In 2020, Mr. Yanai donated $25 million to the Yanai Initiative, the largest gift ever made by an individual donor to a humanities department.
