LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Thayer Spartans women’s soccer team won on and off the field Wednesday.
The players supported a national organization called Morgan’s Message and wore shirts that read “Mental Health Matters.” The group’s goal is to destigmatize mental health after a lacrosse player died by suicide in 2019. Thayer’s school has a chapter with 75 members.
“We’re just building a community to normalize the conversation about mental health, because it’s something that happens to a lot of people, especially in athletics,” team captain Avery Luling said. Ta.
Opponent Bourbon County also wore this shirt during pregame warmups.
Forward Robin Lynch said: “It’s really heartwarming, especially with the other teams participating, and the whole team and all the coaches, it really feels like a community and you feel like everyone supports the message. ” he said.
Lynch said many people involved in athletics feel unable to speak up when something is wrong.
“They push it away because they feel like it’s embarrassing to talk about it or that they shouldn’t feel this emotion, but this makes people think it’s okay to talk about it and a lot of people We can make them understand that it’s normal to talk about it, and people will get through it,” Lynch said.
