For people with the most serious mental illnesses, the lack of treatment can be devastating. Rabbi Coutinho fought hard to find treatment for depression, anxiety and alcohol use disorder.
He tried to find a mental health care provider that would accept his insurance but was thwarted at every turn because of what seemed to be an adequate network.
NPR’s Ritu Chatterjee interviewed Coutinho’s mother, Barbara Weber, and Chatterjee discussed the tragic incident with Weekend Edition’s Ayesha Rascoe.
