History Houghton, MI – The Michigan Technological University hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling 4-1 to Clarkson in non-conference action at McInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies tied the game in the second period, but the Golden Knights scored three unanswered goals.
“I think we played a lot better than the last game,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “Their consistent top-end players played well and took advantage of their opportunities. We are a fairly young team so we need to stay positive and continue to look for areas to grow.”
After not scoring in the first period, the team scored three goals in the second period. 5:21 into the game, Ty Brassington finished a centering pass from behind the net to Ryan Bottrill’s stick, and Clarkson broke the ice.
Steven Sardaryan then tied the game with 1:22 left on his second power play of the season. He sent a centering pass across the slot that hit a defenseman’s skate and deflected under the goalie. Chase Pietila and Jack Works assisted on the goal.
The Golden Knights regained the lead with 1:33 left in the second period, causing a turnover in the offensive zone and sending a long shot off the stick of Jack Sparks through traffic and into the back of the net. Ryan Bottrill set up the goal again.
Tech had a series of power plays in the third period, but could not capitalize, and it was the visiting team who scored shorthanded, making it a two-point game. Garrett Dahm made it 2-on-1 for Eric Barholz.
Tech added an extra attacker, with Clarkson scoring on a 2-0 breakaway and a Sean O’Donnell goal off Eric Barholz to take a 4-1 lead.
The Huskies dominated shots on goal, 32-17. Isaac Gordon added six, Steven Sardarian five and Jack Works four. Former Lake Superior State goaltender Ethan Langenegger made 31 saves. Max Vailinen stopped 13 shots for the Huskies.
Tech went 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
A large contingent of Mitch’s Misfits alumni were in attendance to celebrate our 21st anniversary.
Both teams will conclude the series Saturday at 6:07 p.m. Tech features former hockey players Sean Harrison and John Scott, Tim Bedenis (soccer), Ali Haider (basketball), Jennifer (Jung) Lucas (soccer), Mitch Lake, Glenn Mroz and Dave Nordstrom. We will honor the Sports Hall of Fame class along with them. Sarah (Stream) Stanek (basketball), Tom VanWagner (football).
