History Marquette, MI – The Michigan Tech volleyball team lost 3-1 on the road to Northern Michigan on Thursday. The Huskies won the first game 25-22, but lost 25-23, 25-17, and 25-15.
“Congratulations to Coach Mike and the Wildcats for being the better team tonight,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “They served us off the court and that made a big difference. Our passing was poor again tonight, which made it difficult to get things going on net. ”
“Rachel continues to be a great addition to us, especially on the offensive side of the ball.”
After falling behind by seven points in the first set, the Huskies came back late. The visiting team took a 6-1 lead and then an 8-1 lead. Rachel Zurek grabbed attention in the first round with five kills, including a clincher.
Tech went on a 9-1 run late in the second set to take a 22-20 lead, but the home team finished with a 5-1 rally of its own and tied the game at the break. Paige Wagner, Meg Raab and Rachel Zurek each had three kills.
NMU (10-4, 6-1 GLIAC) took the lead in the third after hitting .333 and controlling play until the end. Seven Huskies combined for eight kills from Meg Raab and Rachel Zurek, but Jacqueline Smith had the final two kills for NMU, who had a match-high 18 kills on the night.
The Wildcats hit .448 and held the Huskies to a .115 batting average before controlling the fourth. Rachel Zurek continued to lead the Huskies with four kills in the set.
Rachel Zurek tied her career high with 16 kills while hitting .364. Meg Rabe also finished in double digits offensively with 10 kills. Casey Miners (eight kills) and Paige Wagner (seven kills) joined Tess Hayes’ offensive force with 41 assists. Amelia Albers led the Huskies with 19 goals, and Jacqueline Yancey added 12 goals.
The Huskies are currently 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC and will host Roosevelt in their first matchup with the Lakers. Saturday’s first serve will be held at 2pm at the SDC Gym.
