Teesside’s digital business is experiencing “exciting” levels of growth, according to academics and company bosses.

Chloe Clover, director of Middlesbrough video production company Wonder Films, also said the former industrial hub’s digital sector had further “ambitions for growth”.

Teesside University academic David Hughes said the region was “moving from a high-emitting economy to a truly clean, green, digital future”.

He added: “New business is starting all the time.”

Dr Joe Noble, also from Teesside University, said some new projects in the area were looking to combine technology with the area’s traditional industrial base.

For example, researchers in the oil industry were able to develop animations detailing how cables connect to rigs, she said.

“If we can animate it and provide a simulation before we actually build it, that’s a huge advantage,” Dr. Noble said.

One of the region’s biggest success stories is the game development company formerly known as SockMoney Studios, which was founded in Middlesbrough in 2013 by two Teesside University graduates.

The company was acquired by Canadian gaming company Behavior Interactive in 2023.

Sock Money co-founder Bob Makin said: “We are currently working on something similar (with major brands such as Assassin’s Creed) in the heart of Middlesbrough.”
